Ryu Mitsuhashi, violin "25,000 Years of Peace" click here to see video of Ryu's performance About this work: Inspired by my research into the lives of the Native Americans who lived here for thousands of years before the arrival of the European settlers, this music features authentic Native American rhythms and melodic patterns. It is intended to bring awareness to the Native Americans' way of living in accord with nature for thousands of years. Not intended to imply that there was never any conflict amongst the peoples themselves, the title "25.000 Years of Peace" implies their spiritual awareness of the earth and their way of living peacefully in relationship to the earth, rather than under the assumption that the earth belonged to them. May this music inspire you to connect a little more with the ways of the Native Americans!
John Rose, piano: Piano Concerto About this work: Originally orchestrated for a larger orchestra, I needed to make important changes due to the change in instrumentation of the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra. Nevertheless, the spirit of the work is definitely in this video recording as well. The work was conceived as a means to tell the story of Tolkien's "The Hobbit" - which is one of my all time favorite tales, through music. While composing this concerto, I read one chapter of the book per day, and immediately made musical sketches on a separate piece of staff paper. (Yes, I compose the old-fashioned way - with a pencil and paper!) At the conclusion of the book, I had all the material necessary to complete the work, which then took very little time to put together.
